Reel Movie Reviews: Made of Honor

Posted by Mr. Shrek on April 30th, 2008

Is Made of Honor as tiresome as its plot suggests? Or as cheesy as its title suggests?

You can tell what our opinion of this Patrick Dempsey movie just from those opening sentences. But do critics around the country agree? Let’s find out…

- How do I loathe the soul-crushingly predictable Made of Honor? Let me count the ways…Slant Magazine

- A strong opening, bursting with wit and vigour, gives way to a predictable, patronising and immensely lazy second half. Could have been so much more…Empire Magazine

Tom, Made of Honor

- An amusing, smartly cast romantic comedy told from a guy’s perspective…The Hollywood Reporter

- Director Paul Weiland and the three (!) screenwriters it took to boil down thousands of bad movies into 101 minutes haven’t provided this one with a single original thought…Village Voice

Ian McKellen: Excited to Reprise Gandalf Role

Posted by Mr. Shrek on April 30th, 2008

Great news, movie fans!

Ian McKellen will reprise the role of the Gandalf in the upcoming movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Beloved filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is set to direct two films based on this book.

“Yes, it’s true,” McKellen said. “I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it’s not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf.”

The actor added:

“But as to how it’s going to work over two films and what’s going to happen on screen, well Guillermo has not got down to working out the major details yet - I can tell you it’s going to be amazing though.”

Ben Barnes as Prince CaspianForget superheroes…for a summer treat, many of you will find their thrills in something a little more mythical…namely the fantastical world of Narnia. On May 16th, the second book in C.S. Lewis’ bestselling children’s fantasy series, “Chronicles of Narnia” comes to theaters, and we want to hear from fans.

What does this film need to win your support? Whether it’s keeping the cynicism of Trumpkin or making sure a particular subplot doesn’t wind up on the cutting room floor, tell us what you, as fans, require from the movie version of “Prince Caspian.”

So chime in. We’ll be posing the best directly to the cast and maybe even put your comment on TV! Speak your mind below.

Ramsey The Intern Videoblogs His ‘Dark Knight’ Viral Event

Posted by MTV Movies Team on April 29th, 2008

Article by Ramsey Boeckholt

Hi everybody, my name is Ramsey and I’m an intern here at MTV News Los Angeles. Yesterday, we got a FedEx from The Joker himself, with a plastic mask and note inside! Naturally, I grabbed a Flip camera (as seen on Oprah!) and headed over to the Hollywood & Highland mall to see what kind of anarchy the Batman villain had planned.

When I got there, I found hundreds of Batman fans dying to learn what would happen when the timer on the website hit zero at exactly 5:30 pm. Many came with their faces painted, or even dressed up in full costume. The note said to show up early “if you want to act like a clown,” but after I put on my mask a security guard told us we had to take them off because of security concerns. Damn mall cops, always keeping the man down!

Some people were on the phone with friends constantly checking the website; others had their computers on them. I made friends with random people who had somebody on their cell, so we were off and running.

At 5:30, our first clue instructed us to count the number of fountains in the mall’s courtyard. Next, we had to count the stone faces on the building across the street.

Soon, hundreds of geeks were on the Walk of Fame, counting the stars between the actors who played Charly Gordon and Jim Curry. I’m only 22 - who the hell are these people? Here are some of the random clues we were dealing with.

Suddenly, someone shouted that the website was saying the game was a joke and we had 3 minutes to get into the movie theater! I’ve never seen 1000 fat men in makeup run so fast.

The crowd flooded the theater lobby, where one of Joker’s henchmen appeared and told us to follow him back down to the street. As the crowd grew even larger, it stretched down Highland and around the corner, occupying most of Hawthorne Avenue. Various henchmen in masks handed out tickets, and we were told to walk back to the theater. After about 3 steps, everyone ran, trampling over the weaker among us.

Some street performer dressed as Peter Pan tried to stop the crowd. I don’t think we’ll be hearing from that guy again.

I was lucky enough to see the new “Dark Knight” trailer that you guys won’t be able to check out for a few more days (check out our shot-by-shot analysis of the trailer here!). There were tons of Batman shots, and lots of Heath Ledger, and the best part was I didn’t see Val Kilmer anywhere! It took me 2-and-a-half hours to watch a 3-minute trailer, but it was worth every bit of the insanity.

Uma Thurman Confesses to Kubrick’s ‘Wartime Lies’

Posted by Shawn Adler on April 29th, 2008

Uma ThurmanThe other day we brought you news that Uma Thurman declined a role in “Lord of the Rings,” a choice she now says was a huge mistake.

But in her storied career of more than two decades, there is one project that trumps even J.R.R. Tolkien’s fabled legendarium in Thurman’s own personal game of career What if … what if she had gotten to work with Stanley Kubrick?

“I was going to make a film with him — for a long time I was scheduled to make a film with him,” she said of “Wartime Lies,” a movie she was signed on to make with Kubrick in the early 90s. “I was contracted to do it and things happened and he shelved the film. He never made the film.”

The story of two Jewish family members, a young woman and her nephew, who disguise themselves as devout Catholics in order to avoid Nazi persecution, “Wartime Lies” was scrapped by the mercurial director after Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List.” At the time, he was reputed to have concluded that an accurate film about the Holocaust was impossible — that the horrors of the era could never be captured on film.

His decision to move on to other projects was “devastating,” said Thurman.

“It was devastating because it was an incredible part,” she confessed. “It would have been the part of my career, the best part I ever had been offered or had written for me, or anything.”

Those are some big words for an actress who’s played Mia Wallace and the Bride. A new draft of “Wartime Lies” is being written by “The Departed” screenwriter William Monahan.

What do you think? Where does Kubrick’s “Wartime Lies” rank in the annals of never-made films? Higher than his “Napoleon”? “A Confederacy of Dunces”? Others? Sound off below.

Jon Favreau Hints at Iron Man 2… and 3!

Posted by Mr. Shrek on April 29th, 2008

In an interview last week, Terrence Howard hinted at the plot of an Iron Man sequel.

While director Jon Favreau wouldn’t reveal that much, he admits that future Iron Man movies are on his brain.

“I thought about it,” Favreau told IGN. “I have one, two, and three in my head, because if you don’t then it seems like you’re just re-treading the same ground. No, the way the Mandarin fits in, the way War Machine fits in, whether or not Obadiah [Stane] pops up again… There’s a lot. The relationship of Pepper.

So we’re really thinking and I’m watching the horizon as I do these movies so that it all makes sense as you watch them altogether. I mean, look at how well Lord of the Rings works. It builds to a climax, compared to movies where it just feels like you’re redoing the same thing over and over again to diminishing returns.”

New Iron Man Movie Poster

While Favreau may be dreaming of future Iron Man movies, he’s quick to point out that he isn’t even on board for a second movie yet.

“There is no second one yet,” he said. “Part of what they do when they do an actor’s deal is they sign you on for many because it can get very expensive. For director they don’t see the need because they can make the movie with or without you. I would love to do a sequel to it and I think that depending on the success of the film…”
