Amazingly enough, this isn’t a sequel to The Birdcage.
It’s actually Jim Carrey and Rodrigo Santoro shooting scenes for I Love You Phillip Morris.
The movie is based on a novel about a married father who gets sentenced to three years in prison. He ends up falling in love with his cellmate, played by Ewan McGregor. When his cellmate gets released, Jim’s character escapes from prison three times in order to be with him.
Naturally.
One drama, one romantic comedy and one muddled, letdown of a movie lead the way for DVD releases this week. Here’s a closer look at all three:
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Stars: Julian Schnabel
Why you should rent it: It’s a true story… about a guy who can only move his left eye. Seriously.
27 Dresses
Stars: Katherine Heigl, James Marsden
Why you should rent it: Because Heigl’s character in Grey’s Anatomy has become so irritating, you’d pay to see her portray anyone else.
The Golden Compass
Stars: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig
Why you should rent it: James Bond movies will seem even more exciting after you’ve seen Craig in this nonsense of a movie.
At the moment, you’re likely drooling with anticipation to watch “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Dark Knight” over the next few months. Heck, maybe you’ll even go see “Punisher: War Zone.”
But once these thrills have come and gone, what comic book movies will come next? It’s a question we’re all dying to know, and vague promises of “Captain America” and “Thor” movies aren’t cutting it. So instead, we hold out hope for a new take on a familiar hero.
“It feels different,” Hugh Jackman told us recently about “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which he’s currently shooting with eyes towards a May 2009 release. “But I don’t think its going be night and day.”
After being the breakout character in three blockbuster mutant flicks, Logan will try and set a spin-off blueprint that could eventually yield a “Magneto” movie and more. “We are dealing with a character who is probably one of the darker comic book characters ever created,” Jackman said of the flick, which co-stars Liev Schreiber, Dominic Monaghan and Ryan Reynolds. “The movie has a lot of fun elements, but there are layers of pain and darkness to this character.”
“Tonally, I would put it more in the ‘Batman Begins’ sort of realm,” he said, distancing the flick from past “X-Men” movies. “That’s sort of where we’re headed.”
And if Jackman has his way, “Origins” won’t be the last time we see him wielding adamantium claws. “There are two conditions for me doing any more: One is will anybody want to see it, and the second is: Will I still have the passion for it?” he explained. “I really wanted to do this spin-off movie, because I felt we hadn’t truly found who this character was.”
“Right now,” Jackman added, fueling hope for the fanboys, “I feel like I could do another ten or eleven.”
One of the most versatile, lovely actresses in the business turns 38 today. Happy birthday, Uma Thurman!
The actress is currently gearing up for publicity trips to various talk shows in order to promote her summer comedy, The Accidental Husband. This film comes on the heels of a far more dramatic turn in The Life Before Her Eyes.
Here’s a closer look at Thurman’s impressive resume:
It’s unclear at the moment if The Dark Knight will set any sort of box office record this summer.
But we’re pretty sure it’s set a record for most movie posters for one film. Here’s the latest, one being circulated mostly around Great Britain:

No, the headline above does not refer to the place Mel Gibson has been on since his arrest for drink driving and subsequent rants against Jewish people. But that would be an understandable mistake to make.
Instead, the controversial actor will star in Edge of Darkness, his first leading feature role since 2002. The project is a movie adaptation of the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries about a straitlaced police investigator (Gibson) who investigates his daughter’s murder and uncovers systemic corruption that led to her death.
The film will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), who also directed the miniseries. William Monahan wrote the script, and Graham King is producing through GK Films. Monahan and King previously worked together for The Departed.

Milo Ventimiglia (of the blockbuster TV series Heroes), headlines this dark crime thriller, which marks the sophomore directorial outing of Marc Schoelermann, following the 2006 telemovie Hexxx. Ventimiglia portrays a young intern, newly arrived at the University Hospital in Philadelphia, who stumbles onto a psychopathic group of colleagues playing a vile game.
