Sam Worthington Talks Terminator Salvation

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

At Comic-Con last week, MoviesOnline caught up with Sam Worthington. The actor takes on the role of Marus Wright in Terminator Salvation, a stranger who shows up and causes a dilemma for John Connor in the movie.

Here are excerpts of the interview...

On director McG: First thing McG ever said to me was I don’t want to make a McG movie. I want to make a Terminator movie and that’s where we are.

On his mindset for the movie: In this movie, I’ve been blown up, shot at, mined, napalmed. You name it, I’ve fuckin’ had it. How do you prepare for that? You just get in there and do your job. It’s as simple as that.

On his character: I look at this movie as what makes Kyle Reese Kyle Reese and what makes John Connor John Connor and my character’s almost like a bridge between them. I look at my character as a bridge to how they connect and how they grow. He’s a drifter.

Derek Mears takes on the iconic role of Jason Voorhees in the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th?

And while he may be scary behind the hockey mask, the actor is nothing but proud of the fact that becoming Jason will send him into a level of notoriety among horror fans even beyond that of past movies such as Cursed and The Hills Have Eyes II.

Derek Mears is set to wear the mask of Jason Voorhees.

Moreover, Mears said he’s already feeling welcome in the rank of horror elites that includes names like Kane Hodder, Andrew Bryniarski and other giants of the industry.

“I have a lot of respect for the guys from the [various] horror series, because I’m also a fan,” the actor said.

“But it’s been really nice, because some of the Jasons who have played Jason before me have contacted me and been like ‘Hey, man. Welcome to the party! Welcome to the team!’ People have been really, really welcoming and kind.”

Transformers Sequel Spoilers Revealed by Comic Book

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

Tranformers 2What, exactly, is director Michael Bay’s plan for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen?

A few spoilers have already been leaked regarding the 2009 blockbuster, but an upcoming comic book may be the best look yet into next summer's release.

Hardcore fans can look forward to a five-part prequel miniseries entitled “Transformers: Destiny” that will to bridge the gap between the 2007 film and its upcoming sequel. Writer Chris Mowry recently talked to MTV News about the project.

“[We're going to] expand on the ‘Reign of Starscream’ story that we’re doing and tie everything in to what this next movie is going to be,” said Mowry, who partners on the book with artist Alex Milne. “The next movie starts out with just tons of action and there’s obviously going to be a lot of questions, so we’re hoping to answer some of those beforehand.”

As fans know, at the end of Transformers, Optimus Prime issued the call for his off-world Autobots to head to Earth. We also saw Starscream blast into space after the defeat of his leader Megatron.

Where did he go? Mowry’s “Reign of Starscream” miniseries — currently on shelves — answers that question and leads directly into “Destiny.”

“‘Reign of Starscream’ starts right at the very end of that big last action sequence in Mission City. Starscream realizes that Frenzy, the little portable jump drive had accessed all the information the humans had about the All Spark, so he gets this idea of, ‘If I could get all the information that’s stored within Frenzy’s body, I might be able to rebuild the All Spark back on Cybertron and therefore everyone will think I’m this great leader.

Venom Creator Considers Spider-Man Spinoff

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

A significant question being posed in Hollywood these days is: Who will play the next Batman villain?

As that gets debated, rumors continues to swirl over an actual spin-off for a certain Spider-Man bad guy. Might a movie centered around Venom ever come to fruition?

As one of the most villainous characters in Marvel comics history, could this pile of extraterrestrial goo truly transition to leading man?

“I think Venom could headline a good movie on his own, but it would be tricky and would depend in large part on the script,” Venom’s creator David Michelinie told MTV News.

Venom

Naturally, Michelinie argues the success of any Venom movie would depend most on who’s wearing the suit.

In Spider-Man 3, Venom fused with Eddie Brock (portrayed by Topher Grace), but Brock’s climactic and seemingly conclusive death scene leaves an open slot for the symbiote’s host.

“If Eddie’s still dead from Spider-Man 3, said Michelinie,” “the story and the success of the movie would depend almost entirely on the personality of the character who would combine with the symbiote: his motivations, his background, his methodology… his heart and soul.”

The Mummy 4 Spoilers Already Leaked

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

Yes, you read the headline above correctly.

Despite a less-than-stellar showing of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor at the box office this weekend (though, in the film's defense, what movie would do well against The Dark Knight?), a fourth installment of this franchise is all but assured.

Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Look out, undead world: The Mummy 4 is in the works.

In fact, director Rob Cohen has a clear vision for the plut of The Mummy 4 (warning: The Mummy 3 spoilers ahead!). He recently told to MTV:

“Rick, because he was treated by the pool of eternal life, Rick is now immortal. I’d love to explore how that plays out for him...

Another spoiler, Jonathan [John Hannah] winds up with the artifact in this film and he doesn’t realize, nor do we, what its powers are. In my mind, that artifact still has a lot of prizes in it, the eye of Shangri La, this big diamond.”

Would you watch a fourth installment of The Mummy? Or does this franchse need to wrap itself up already?

Reel Movie Reviews: Tropic Thunder

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

ReviewsTropic Thunder comes out on August 13.

What do critics have to say about this Ben Stiller-directed comedy? We asked a few for their opinion...

- A smart-alecky sendup of Hollywood in general and action films in particular, Tropic Thunder undeniably provokes quite a few laughs, but of the most hollow kind... -- Variety

- The self-aggrandizing humor becomes tiresome midway through...but the ending is spectacular and relentless. It would be hard for even the most cynical to avoid a hefty chuckle or two by the time the credits roll... -- ReelzChannel

Tropic Thunder

- A broad action comedy that manages to mix subtlety with satire... -- Hollywood Reporter

- Robert Downey, Jr.'s performance is nearly on par with what Heath Ledger did as the Joker... -- Cinema Blend

Doom Sequel Rumors Fueled by Video Game Creator

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

Despite the fact that Doom - released in 2005 and starring Dwayne Johnson - was neither a critical nor commercial success, the video game's developer is still calling for a sequel.

"Personally I'd like to do another Doom movie - I thought working with it was a blast, software CEO Todd Hollenshead said. "There are some lessons we learned. The best way to do things better is to get the experience."

Doom

Despite the presence of Dwayne Johnson, viewers didn't exactly line up for Doom.

Universal Pictures currently owns the film rights to the game, but Hollenshead believes that the forthcoming Doom 4 edition will help inspire a sequel.

"We'll see what happens when we get further along in development of the game and there's more buzz and we share more about what the game will be about. As the buzz meter starts to go up, that may kind of kick-start the guys over at Universal."

USA Today Speaks to James Franco About Upcoming Roles

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 4th, 2008

James Franco - who stars this weekend in Pineapple Express and later this year in the biopic Milk - recently sat down with USA Today.

As for the two movies come up, Milk producer Bruce Cohen said: "It couldn't be a better showcase for his talent to look at these two roles. They're both different sides of him...

He can bring the attributes of the young stoner guy he needs for Pineapple Express, but underneath that is the scholar and the deep thinker and the guy who wants to learn about art and is interested in politics. His performances are complex and layered."

Franco himself was asked about the role of Saul (pictured above) in Pineapple Express and deadpanned:

"I was always going to play Saul. They found me in my apartment, there was no script, they just came into my place. My dealer came after me. It was perfect."

In reality, Franco told the newspaper that he "used to smoke weed, but I haven't done it in a long time. Everybody, even now, thinks, 'That guy is stoned.' It's just the way I talk, because I don't smoke weed.

Somehow, there's something about me, the way I talk, that implies that I'm on drugs."

Rick O’Connell and the rest of the crew from the “Mummy” series have fought through The Rock and battled Jet Li, but could it be that the most serious immortal threat to society isn’t a mummy at all, but…

You know what? We’re just gonna go ahead and put a massive spoiler warning here before finishing this sentence. If you haven’t seen “Mummy 3” yet, read at your own risk.

…Rick himself?

Brendan Frasier as an immortal hero up against an immortal villain is just one of many ideas “Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” director Rob Cohen wants to explore in another installment of the blockbuster series, he told MTV News, insisting that a fourth installment is all but guaranteed if audiences respond well to “Mummy 3.”

“Rick, because he was treated by the pool of eternal life, Rick is now immortal. I’d love to explore how that plays out for him,” Cohen said. “Another spoiler, Jonathan [John Hannah] winds up with the artifact in this film and he doesn’t realize, nor do we, what its powers are. In my mind, that artifact still has a lot of prizes in it, the eye of Shangri La, this big diamond.”

When we spoke to Maria Bello in February, she was adamant that there would be more “Mummy” movies, even going so far as to predict the fourth would take place in the Amazon. When we caught up with Fraser a few months later, he suggested Peru.

Geographically, they were too close for coincidence. We wondered then, somewhat rhetorically, did they talk about it with each other beforehand?

You bet, Cohen said, declaring that Peru or Mexico would absolutely be the setting for “Mummy 4.”

“What I’m really happy about is that, by taking ‘The Mummy’ out of Egypt and putting it in China, by exploring a different approach to the quest for immortality, we now have it clear that the ‘Mummy’ franchise can travel,” he said. “Now we know that if we want to go to Mexico or we want to go to Peru, we can because there’s a cultural truth there of the mummies and these beautiful cultures.

“They have a lot of mummies. The Aztec culture had a lot of mummies and some of their mummy designs for the Foundation Army were taken from Mexican mummies that they have found,” he added. “So I think that somehow that might make the basis of a good story.”

What do you think? Would you like to see “Mummy 4”? Mexico sound about right for you? What about Fraser as an immortal? Sound off on your thoughts below.

Why Did ‘The Love Guru’ Bomb? We Ask The Guru Himself, Deepak Chopra

Posted by Jennifer Vineyard on August 4th, 2008

Mike Myers in 'The Love Guru'“The Love Guru” didn’t bomb because of Justin Timberlake. It didn’t bomb because Mike Myers waited too long after the last installment of “Austin Powers” to become one with the cultural zeitgeist. It didn’t bomb because Hindu fundamentalists raised a stink over the film’s usage of sacred terms.

It bombed, says Deepak Chopra, because Myers got too mired in gross-out jokes.

“‘The Love Guru’ didn’t work well because Mike Myers addresses a teenage audience, and he was trying to mix it up with metaphysics,” Chopra told MTV News. “Humor mixed with spirituality can work, if it’s done well. But frankly speaking, this was not a good attempt.”

Chopra, who counts Myers as a friend, knew well in advance that the comedian was planning to poke him at him with his character of Guru Maurice Pitka. After all, he agreed to lampoon himself with a cameo as Pitka’s rival in the guru business. And the spoof went both ways. At the same time Myers was making the movie, Chopra was writing “Why Is God Laughing? The Path to Joy and Spiritual Optimism,” using Myers as the basis for his main character, comedian Mickey Fellows. “It’s a spoof on Mike Myers,” Chopra said. “I told Mike that since he was doing a spoof on me, I was going to do one on him.” (Myers returned the favor by writing the foreword for the book, “because he gets the joke.”)

“Humor in spirituality is very important,” Chopra said. “It helps address paradox, contradictions, and ambiguity, as well as themes of mortality and transcendence.” The original script for “Love Guru” had more of that multi-layered humor, Chopra said. “It was actually better than the movie, to be honest,” he said. “I think as they went along, they kept revising it.”

“I think what he could have done was have been a little less gross about some of the jokes [which were added later],” Chopra said. “And some of the spiritual themes, they could have shown more the lighter side. He was almost too serious in his deprecation. He needed more humor.”

So why do you think “The Love Guru” bombed? And what does Mike Myers need to do before making the next “Austin Powers”?
