Even as a casual football fan I was taken aback when I saw the headlines that emerged in the last couple hours about Brett Favre heading to the New York Jets. This whole business takes me back to my own personal favorite memory of Brett Favre and of course it involves the movies (you’re on a movies blog, welcome).

Remember when the Farrelly brothers were all the rage and “There’s Something About Mary” was taking the country by storm? I do and I remember especially this awesome scene below, a rare celebrity cameo that actually paid off. And how can you really beat an opening exchange that goes:

Matt Dillon: What the hell is Brett Favre doing here?
Brett Favre: I’m in town to play the Dolphins, you dumbass.

Seth Rogen and James Franco in 'Pineapple Express'It’s the buzzword of 2008: Cross-pollination. And it’s all the rage these days thanks to Marvel’s ambitious slate, which already included Nick Fury showing up in “Iron Man” and Tony Stark showing up in “The Incredible Hulk.” So if comics can get away with it, why not Judd Apatow?

We’re actually not joking. Combining Apatow’s comedies isn’t just a good idea, it’s an idea whose time very well may come soon, “Pineapple Express” star James Franco told MTV News.

When asked about the possibility of a “Pineapple Express” sequel, Franco said that not only has it been discussed, it’s about to get some real McLovin.

“Even before ‘Superbad’ came out, I think the studio was trying to get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to write a sequel, but they really didn’t want to write a sequel. I guess the kids would go to college or something like that [that was the studio's idea],” Franco said. “And so, an answer to that was to do a ‘Superbad’/'Pineapple Express’ crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.”

Rogen himself has stated that he’d be interested in a “Pineapple” sequel. But how would he combine the two universes? Just ask Franco.

“I could sell them [the characters from 'Superbad'] something, but I think we’d want some action, so you know, somehow the kids get in trouble somehow and we have to get them out of it,” Franco mused. “And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we’d have to kill one of them off.”

And Franco’s character Saul? The drug dealing, pot smoking, hippie based at least in part on Brad Pitt’s performance in “True Romance”?

“The thing about Saul is that I don’t really think he goes anywhere,” Franco laughed. “That’s his tragedy.”

What do you think? Would you like to see a “Pineapple Express” and “Superbad” crossover? Or is that just too strange? Sound off below.

Reel Movie Reviews: Pineapple Express

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 6th, 2008

ReviewsSimply based on the star power of Pineapple Express - everything Seth Rogen touches these days turned to comedic gold - there's little doubt this movie will fare well at the box office.

But does that mean it's actually funny? Here's a collection of what many film critics have to say...

- It is uneven, overly long, makes utterly no sense -- but still manages to work as stoner escapism with a lot of pretty explosions... -- Jam! Movies

- Pineapple Express presents viewers with an oxymoronic experience: the action stoner film... -- Dallas Morning News

- How much you enjoy Pineapple Express may depend on what associations (or substances) you bring into the theater with you. As an action comedy, it's just a bad trip... -- Baltimore Sun

Mark Wahlberg Compares Movie Roles

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 6th, 2008

At Comic-Con last week, Mark Wahlberg was asked if the role of Max Payne - for the movie Max Payne, based on the video game Mark Wahlberg - was a difficult character to get into.

He laughed off the notion.

“After doing The Lovely Bones, where you know also dealing with loss and a horrific act of violence, but then being able to do something about it was so nice. I remember The Happening had just came out and I walked into the editing room with it, the looping stage with John and he showed me some shit and I was just fuc---ing screaming with excitement.

I was so happy that my career was saved. My life, my credibility, my ability to walk down the street was in a hood again. I was just like yeah. I really was. I was fuc---ing screaming at the top of my lungs for like five fuc---ing minutes. But this is the kind of thing that I want to go and see.

I don't want to be told what I can and can't do, I want to try something different, I want to be able to play a lawyer, play a doctor but I feel most comfortable when I'm in a world like this.”

Look for Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne on October 17.

Hellboy 3 Rumors Create Conflict

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 6th, 2008

For the record, it's unclear if a third Hellboy movie will ever be made.

But if it is, director Guillermo del Toro has said, it "would be facing your destiny, if such a thing exists, and making the ultimate decision."

Sounds like a third movie would be the end of Hellboy, doesn't it? One important individual has a prolem with this, however: Hellboy creator, comic book writer Mike Mignola.

“The problem is, what del Toro’s talked about to me is that ‘Hellboy III’ would be the end of Hellboy,” Mignola said. “And here’s where we have the big conflict. My version of Hellboy in the comics is a finite story, but it’s going to take me 15 years to get to the ending. If [del Toro] makes ‘Hellboy III’ and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘But I’m not done yet.’

Hellboy and Friends

Mignola added:

"My Hellboy is going to die, but I want to be the one who does that. And if del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get to the end of the comic."

For now, the issue is moot. But we'll let you know if and when a third Hellboy movie is planned.

George Lucas Fuels New Indiana Jones Movie Rumors

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 6th, 2008

Despite the luke warm reviews for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, director George Lucas doesn't sound afraid to make another installment of this beloved franchise.

He does wanna clear up rumors that the next film would center on Shia LaBeouf's character of Mutt Williams, though.

"Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones," Lucas told MTV. "Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones. If it was Mutt Williams it would be Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis or something."

As for plot of another Indiana Jones movie, Lucas said finding a subject was crucual to getting the project off the ground.

"We are looking for something for him to go after. They are very hard to find. It's like archaeology. It takes a huge amount of research to come up with something like that."

Danny McBride is a Busy, Funny Man

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 6th, 2008

Danny McBride is a rising star in the world of comedy.

He wrote the critically acclaimed indie feature The Foot Fist Way and has a role in two summer comedies: Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder.

Danny McBride

The actor recently spoke to ComingSoon.net about the unusual experience of having a pair of major films come out at once:

It's nuts. There's two big action comedies this summer and they come out a week apart from each other, which is crazy, but I guess the audience is the lucky ones. I've seen both these films and they're both so f*cking awesome and I really do feel like they're groundbreaking as far as summer comedies go.

It's like you haven't seen it like this, it's good. Three cheers for the R-rated comedy. I think it's a good thing as long as those movies are making money it makes things more interesting.

Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder come out tomorrow and August 13, respectively.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno Staves Off Fatal Rating

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 6th, 2008

That collective sigh of relief you can probably hear from all sides of the country?

It's coming from Kevin Smith, now that his next movie, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, has avoided an NC-17 rating.

Zack, Miri

The director has won an appeal to the Motion Picture Association of Americalower that figure to an R-rating. Spokeswoman Elizabeth Kaltman said Tuesday the rating was revised after the group's appeals board viewed the movie.

"We didn't set out to make an NC-17 film. That's just commercial suicide," Smith said.

Britney SpearsBy Gil Kaufman

There are a lot of roles we could see Britney Spears playing in remakes of classic movies that should never be remade, like Molly Ringwald’s snooty character in “The Breakfast Club” or even the Natalie Wood slot in “Rebel Without a Cause.” Some might quibble that Russ Meyer’s 1965 cult-classic jiggle-fest “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” is not on par with those cinema icons (though plenty would argue otherwise, including yours truly). But there’s a longstanding rumor that just won’t go away that says Quentin Tarantino is excited about the prospect of casting Spears in his remake of “Pussycat.” Let’s just say we’re not lining up for tickets just yet.

See, Tarantino is currently occupied with his work on a re-imagining of “The Dirty Dozen” called “Inglorious Bastards” — other projects aren’t likely to be high on his list of priorities for a couple of years. On top of that, when MTV News reporter Larry Carroll asked the director about the remake at Sundance, he responded, “That’s complete bullsh–.”

Still, the rumor lives on in the tabloids. According to England’s Daily Telegraph, [LINK Daily Telegraph TO http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/celebritynews/2509196/Britney-Spears-to-play-lesbian-killer-in-Quentin-Tarantino-film] Tarantino has reportedly zeroed in on Spears to play killer lesbian stripper Varla (famously played by the ultra-busty Tura Satana in the original) in the touching tale of three Sapphic pole dancers who go wilding in the desert and hold a woman hostage as they try to separate an old man from his cash.

As Varla, Spears would murder the woman’s boyfriend and “have sex scenes with another girls before the drama ends in a bloodbath,” the Telegraph reports. It also reports that Tarantino is in discussions with unnamed Hollywood stars to take the roles of the other two strippers.

“Quentin is convinced Britney will be brilliant. She’s delighted. She thinks it could turn her career around,” an unnamed source told the paper. “It is perfect Tarantino material. He wanted to get Britney first. She’s playing the most important character.”

Aside from a single starring role in the 2002 flop “Crossroads,” cameos in “Austin Powers: Goldmember” and “Longshot,” and a two-episode arc on “How I Met Your Mother” last season, Spears’ acting résumé is a bit thin, to say the least. That, of course, is not a problem if you’ve ever seen the original.

But given her attempts to get her career, and life, back on track over the past six months by leaving her tabloid exploits behind, hooking up with Tarantino for this role would be an odd choice. Then again, given the long lead time on most Tarantino projects, by the time it actually starts filming — if it actually starts filming — she just might be on top again, and it wouldn’t really matter.
