Terminator Salvation to Hit The Road?

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 18th, 2008

Over the last couple months, director McG has compared his vision of Terminator Salvation to Batman Begins and Aliens.

In a recent conversation with MTV News, McG gave the network another dark, serious tale with which he'd compare the next Terminator movie.

“I gave all the actors The Road to read to get their heads right bout this sort of existential detachment that living in a post apocalyptic world would bring,” McG said. “We’re in a very large post apocalyptic environment. The bombs have gone off and there’s very little left. People are wandering through lonely landscapes."

Cormac McCarthy’s book won the Pulitzer Prize and is being made into a movie itself this fall.

The Road follows a father and son journeying together through an ash covered landscape, years after a worldwide disaster that killed almost everyone else on earth. It’s brilliant, depressing and morbid.

McG thinks John Connor can relate to all those emotions.

“I think the first two pictures took those ideas so seriously,” McG said of the themes of inescapable destiny and dread. “We wanted to make sure we did that [as well].”

First there was wizard rock. Then there was Twi-rock. And now that the floodgates have opened, expect to see a lot more bands singing about books and movies.

Devin Overman from the Owl Post and Be Safe Bella wants to start a third band, called simply Book Rock. “Each song would be about a different book, like ‘Lord of the Flies,’” she said. “It wouldn’t have to be specific to fantasy series.”

Paul DeGeorge from Harry and the Potters almost started a band that sung the calypsos from Kurt Vonnegut’s “Cat’s Cradle,” as a sort of “weird experimental jazz odyssey” but didn’t think anyone would go see it. (Someone beat him to it anyway). Joe DeGeorge (also from Harry and the Potters) wants to see “an awesome metal band” called Ishmael and the Whale.

So of all the possibilities — from “Lord of the Flies” to “Moby Dick” — it’s Meg Cabot’s “Princess Diaries” that will be up next. Switchblade Kittens, who currently play in the wizard rock scene, told MTV News that their next album will be called “Rebel Princess” and all the lyrics will be inspired by everything Cabot (the ten “Princess Diaries” books as well as the “Teen Idol” and “All-American Girl” books). “We got such a good response from wizard rock,” lead singer Drama. “But with wizard rock, we sing from the perspective of college-aged wizard rockers in a band. It’s about being in a magical world.”

“With Meg Cabot,” she continued, “she has 27 bestsellers, so you really can’t zone in quite the same way. I don’t want to infringe upon her as a writer, so I try not to do it as plot summaries: ‘Princess Mia was walking down the street…’ No. It’s much more interpretative, which is what music should be.”

All this is also being done with Cabot’s blessing — unlike wizard rock, which J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. unofficially tolerate. Cabot is also planning to tour with the band in 2009 — to sign books, not to sing along. “I would like it if she would sing, but I don’t know if she would like that,” Drama laughed. Tour stops will include the Mall of America in Minnesota and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

“We used to be a regular rock band,” Drama said, “and now I guess we’re a book rock band.”

Would you want to see a Meg Cabot-themed band? What other books or movies would you like to hear songs about?

Christopher Nolan Approached to Direct The Dark Knight Sequel

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 18th, 2008

Despite the wild success of The Dark Knight, along with rumors of who might portray the next Batman villain, there hasn't been anything official yet about a Batman sequel actually coming together.

Until now.

According to Variety, "There's a deal for [director Christopher Nolan] to helm a third pic, but he has yet to decide on whether to tackle it yet."

Warner Bros. studio boss Alan Horn told the publication: "We have no idea where Chris is going with this. ... We haven't had any conversations with him about it."

Don't worry, Batman fans. We'd be shocked if Nolan doesn't sign a deal to direct the follow-up to The Dark Knight before the year is over.

Rainn Wilson: Done with Weirdos!

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 18th, 2008

Rainn Wilson portrays a creepy weirdo on The Office. But don't expect this trend to continue, as the actor told USA Today in a recent interview about his upcoming movie, The Rocker.

"No more creepy, nerdy weirdos," Wilson said. "I play one on a TV show and have played them before, and people have seen me as that. Frankly, I can do a lot more and different stuff. I don't want to limit myself."

Wilson plays Robert "Fish" Fishman, a Cleveland loser whose dreams - as well as his clothes and mullet hairstyle - are two decades out of fashion. As Vesuvius, the group that unceremoniously dumped him, prepares for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Fishman joins his teenage nephew's garage band and hijacks its early success.

"There is always this fear in Hollywood that, 'Oh, characters need to be likable and relatable.' And I don't know if that's necessarily the case," Wilson said of his character in The Rocker.

"I think that characters need to be human and they need to be recognizable, but they don't have to necessarily be likable," he says. "That opens a whole world of comic possibilities. I enjoy playing essentially unlikable characters and really committing to it and digging in."

Reel Movie Stars: Jason Statham

Posted by Reel Movie Guy on August 18th, 2008

Jason Statham PhotoSince his debut role in the 1998 Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Jason Statham has quickly risen to being one of the biggest names in action movies.  Trust us when we say Statham is a Reel Movie Star.

Statham initially started off in the world of sports in both competitive diving and driving.  As a diver, Statham was an Olympic Diver on the British National Diving Team.  As a driver, Statham finished 12th in the World Championships in 1992.

Statham soon took his chiseled ahtletic body to the world of modeling.  It was when he was a model for the French Connection that he was discovered and auditioned for a role in Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.  From there, Statham has been on a non-stop career filled with some of the best action movies this decade and Statham's next movie, Death Race, doesn't look to disappoint.

To honor this bloke, we put up just a fraction of his movies with a ten movie filmography, six photos, and hundreds of quick one-liners.

Now what Reel Movie Star post would be complete without a series of fun facts:

  • Did nearly all his own stunts in The Transporter
  • Well trained in several martial arts, particularly kickboxing and Jujitsu
  • Jason and director Guy Ritchie became obsessed with chess during the shooting of Revolver
  • Dated English model and actress Kelly Brook until she met actor Billy Zane on the set of Survival Island
  • Also dated former singer Sophie Monk

Now we'll leave you with a photo montage of this hunky action star.

McG Tells ‘Terminator Salvation’ Actors To Hit ‘The Road’

I’ve lived through deadly earthquakes, armed robberies, South American protest rallies and the time my kitchen caught fire, and none of those compare to being on the receiving end of Robert Culp. The 78-year-old actor is legendary for his sardonic barbs and observations, so — as a huge fan — I count myself lucky to have triggered his half-joking ire during an interview to discuss the upcoming “Greatest American Hero” comic book and animated webisodes.

So what lead to my skewering? Well, I referred to “GAH” as a superhero franchise…something that Mr. Culp takes exception to. Find out why in the video below and then tell us if you agree. And here’s a related exclusive tid-bit…according to co-star Connie Sellecca, the trio (including of course star William Katt), have been offered cameos in the “GAH” feature film that showrunner Stephen J. Cannell is developing.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: Click here to read about the “Greatest American Hero” comic and animated series.
