Kevin CovaisIt may or may not be your idea of great cinema, but when deciding whether or not to see “College” this weekend, the new comedy starring Drake Bell, Andrew Caldwell, and Kevin Covais, well, there’s one thing you really should know, Covais laughed.

“I strip down to my underwear in the movie,” he said, tongue planted firmly in check. “Seriously, they should put that on the poster. See me stripped down to my tightie whities – how can people not go?”

(Note: Covais’s nickname on “American Idol” was Chicken Little. We’ve taken this paragraph off to allow you to make your own obvious pun.)

Stripping down is all part of the hijinks Covais and his crew of merry miscreants get to take part in thanks to the film – one part “Animal House,” one part “American Pie” – about a group of three high school seniors visiting a college as prospective students who get roped into fraternity initiation.

“It really pushes some boundaries,” Covais said. “We do body shots off of a guy, I think people are going to think how’d they get through that one – the infamous bearcat. There’s a nice pig farm scene, we get to mess around with some pigs in the mud. This movie is in a league of its own.”

How crazy are some of the adventures Covais gets into in the film? So crazy they’re just about the most insane things he’s ever done, the 19-year-old confessed.

“I gotta tell you I have very little experience with the whole college party thing. I do consider myself to be a pretty social guy, but I’ve not done the crazy wild college experience. Not yet,” he told MTV. “My movie experience was my craziest time and it wasn’t even real. I do intend to live it up one day.”

“College” opens today.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done as part of a fraternity initiation? Or just at college? Sound off about your wild stories below.

Opening This Weeekend: Disaster Movie, College, Traitor

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

Three new movies were released this week, two of which look like horrific comedies and the other of which focuses on terrorism. Sounds like fun all around!

Here's a closer look at the trio...

Disaster Movie
Stars: Carmen Electra, Kim Kardashian
Quick synopsis: Yet another movie that spoofs other, much better movies.
Prediction: Electra and Kardashian - combined with low-minded humor - will result in a decent box office showing. Guys like boobs and not thinking.

Mocking JunoBatman is EnchantedIndiana Jones Spoof

College
Stars: Drake Bell
Quick synopsis: Three high school seniors visit college for a crazy weekend.
Prediction: A worse reaction from movie goers than the one most freshmen experience after their first night out after nine shots of tequila.

College PicA College TryKevin Brewer

Traitor
Stars: Don Cheadle
Quick synopsis: A U.S. Special Operations officer is at the center of a conspiracy.
Prediction: We love Cheadle, but the topic just seems too sensitive these days for the movie to make any dent at the box office.

Reel Movie Reviews: The Women

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

There's nary a man to be seen in the trailer for The Women.

But in the summer of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, maybe this isn't a bad thing. The movie has certainly chosen the ideal time to be released.

Thanks to its charming cast, our all-male staff actually didn't mind The Women. Check out our full review of it now!

Bryce Dallas Howard: Bring on Spider-Man 4!

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

Bryce Dallas Howard is game for Spider-Man 4.

The actress, who played Gwen Stacy in the last film in this franchise, sounded excited about the possibility of a fourth during an interview with MTV News.

“You know, honestly, I would love to be apart of any continuation of the franchise. But, I also really understand that there’s so many different story lines that the fans are really excited to see, and the studio, and the producers, and the filmmakers really need to appease everyone,” the actress said. “Whether or not Gwen Stacy comes back, I mean, I wish it was up to me, but it’s not. But yes, if they’d call me, I’d be there in a heart beat.”

Kevin Smith Promises Full Frontal!

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

Smith, KevinBrace yourself, everyone: in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, nudity will abound.

But it won't be the kind that makes us so excited to see Jennifer's Body.

In a new interview with MTV, director Kevin Smith promises full frontal nudity... of the male variety.

MTV: When we spoke to you about Zack and Miri Make a Porno last year, both you and Rogen teased a shot of full-frontal nudity. So do we get to see the jewels on display?
Smith: Yeah! You get one definitive ba-- shot then you get a bonus ba-- shot in the movie later on. It's all of [Jason] Mewes. You get to see every inch of Mewes in this movie.

MTV: Is any sex in the movie that's actually erotic?
Smith: There's one scene in the movie that sex is played straightforward, but it's the one scene where there's the least flesh on display. And that is a very passionately charged, sweet scene, so that one they never focused on. [The actors are] fully clad during it. We play it mostly on their faces.

Jack’s Mannequin Get The ‘Twilight’ Treatment

Posted by Brian Jacks on August 29th, 2008

“Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer knows how to craft a story on the pages of a book, and now we’ll see her extend that vision into yet another realm…the music video. Singer/songwriter Andrew McMahon of Jack’s Mannequin has enlisted Meyer to create and direct the video for the band’s upcoming single, “The Resolution.” Read more about it here, and then check out the video clip below to hear McMahon giving us some hints about what we’ll see.

Optimus Prime Speaks!

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

We've heard from numerous people connected to Transformers 2.

But here's a unique interview: Ain't It Cool recently sat down with Peter Cullen, the voice actor behind Optimus Prime. Here's an excerpt from that conversation:

Q: Was there any inkling when you took on the role of Optimus Prime that this character was going to leave such a profound effect on people?
Cullen: I think so. When I saw the character breakdown, I said, "This is indeed a real hero. This is not like any hero we've ever seen before." He penetrated different zones. There was a sense of him. He wasn't just muscle and strength. He went beyond that. There was dignity and courage, and a soft spoken honor and integrity about him. Very well written.

So to apply those traits... they weren't necessarily implicated in the script; I just did an impression of my brother Larry, who served in the Marine Corps, and lowered the voice. I think we nailed it. The scripts were wonderfully written, and there was so much to absorb in a half-hour.

George Clooney to Go Up in the Air

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

Starring in Burn After Reading next month, George Clooney is currently negotiating his next project.

According to Variety, the handsome actor might star in Juno director Jason Reitman's adaptation of Walter Kirn's 2001 novel Up in the Air. Reitman has written the screenplay adaptation in addition to coming aboard to direct the film.

The publication says Clooney's role would be that of "an unapologetic corporate downsizer whose untethered life is consumed by collecting air miles."

David Duchovny’s Sex Addiction: The Signs Were There

Posted by Tami Katzoff on August 29th, 2008

It’s really no surprise that David Duchovny is in rehab for sex addiction, as People reported Thursday. Just look at his filmography: The clues are everywhere, including in the titles. His most recent projects include the second “X-Files” movie (”X” as in “X-rated”) and Showtime’s “Californication” (’nuff said), but even in years past his TV and film work often hinted that something just wasn’t right with the guy.

Way back in 1990, when no one outside the English departments at Princeton and Yale knew who he was, Duchovny starred in a movie called “Julia Has Two Lovers.” He played a creepy dude who called women he selected randomly from the phone book and pleasured himself during the conversations. On a related note, in the “X-Files” TV series, Fox Mulder had very little actual sex, but it is widely known that the character had a major porn addiction. In at least one episode he gets turned on watching a tape of a Bigfoot sighting.

In 1991 Duchovny co-starred with Mimi Rogers in “The Rapture.” He played Randy (Randy!), a man of questionable ethics who is into seriously kinky sex. During the second half of the film, Randy finds religion, makes an honest woman out of Mimi’s character and fathers a child before getting blown away by a disgruntled former employee.

In 1992 Duchovny began a long stint as narrator of “Red Shoe Diaries,” a Showtime series that involved anonymous women who answered newspaper personals ads by describing their sordid sex lives in vivid detail.

On “The Larry Sanders Show” Duchovny had a few guest-starring stints playing “himself,” a character who repeatedly demonstrates his infatuation with Larry.

Duchovny starred in 2002’s “Full Frontal.” I’m not too familiar with the movie’s plot, but the title says it all.

On a 2003 episode of “Sex and the City” Duchovny guest-starred as Jeremy, an old flame of Carrie’s who tries to rekindle the romance. But their renewed relationship is hindered by the fact that Jeremy resides in a mental institution. Was Jeremy there because he was a sex addict? It’s unclear, but looking back — knowing what we know now — it does seem to be a distinct possibility.

Kim Kardashian Dishes on Disaster Movie

Posted by Mr. Shrek on August 29th, 2008

Kim Kardashian is known for having giant breasts and for starring in a sex tape with Ray J.

But now the socialite is trying to build a movie career. She stars in this weekend's Disaster movie and talked about it with TV Guide:

TVGuide.com: In Disaster Movie, what's the "clothes line" plot on which all the spoofs and gags are hung?
Kardashian: Basically, it's about a group of friends trying to get out of New York city because all these natural disasters are happening. Along the way, we spoof everything.

Disaster Movie Photo

TVGuide.com: And what does "everything" include?
Kardashian: All of the superhero movies – Iron Man, Batman and The Hulk — Sex and the City, Amy Winehouse, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas brothers, Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo.... We do everything. Indiana Jones, High School Musical....

TVGuide.com: Do you have a favorite moment or sight gag?
Kardashian: The funniest part of the movie, I have to say, is Amy Winehouse. That character is hysterical. My favorite part of filming was when Carmen [Electra] and I spoof the WWE Divas, and we do a whole wrestling scene. We had to learn all these choreographed moves, so it looked way crazier than what it was. We had stunt doubles to help us with the super-crazy stuff, but it was insane.

Mariah Carey’s Scream Startles ‘Tennessee’ Co-Star

Posted by Jennifer Vineyard on August 29th, 2008

Mariah CareyMariah Carey gets a lot of grief over being a bad actress — “Glitter,” anyone? — but she was believable enough to fool her “husband.”

Lance Reddick — who’s known for his work on “The Wire” and “Lost” and will be a FBI agent on J.J. Abrams’ upcoming television show “Fringe”– was cast late in the game for the upcoming movie “Tennessee” (”Honestly, they were going to go with a bigger name,” Reddick said, “but they lost that someone”). So by the time he was signed up as Carey’s character’s husband Frank, “I had less than a week before we started shooting,” Reddick said.

On his first day on set, he was slated to shoot a scene where Frank menances his wife Krystal, because she didn’t buy the kind of beer he wanted for his card game. Krystal’s a waitress who dreams of being a songwriter (at least the latter part is something Mariah could relate to). But she’s married to a state trooper who believes that since he pays the bills, she better do what he wants.

“So on my first day, the first time I ever meet her, I have to go in cold and grab her arm and throw her against the wall,” Reddick said. And while he was holding her by the neck, she screamed. Considering her multi-octave range, “I wouldn’t even want to begin to imitate how that sounded,” he said.

“I thought I hurt her,” he added, “so I stopped. I said, ‘Are you OK?’ And she said, ‘Hello? I’m acting.’”

Reddick was astonished. After that first take, they did the scene from start to finish a couple more times to get different angles, but since that moment, he’s had a newfound respect for her.

“She was so committed to being a great actress,” he said. “And she was.”

Do you think Mariah Carey can act? What have you seen her in, and what did you think? Do you plan on seeing her in “Tennessee”?
