EXCLUSIVE: ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Soundtrack Revealed

Posted by Larry Carroll on November 20th, 2008

Slumdog MillionaireIt’s one of the most buzzed-about films of the season, and a surefire Oscar contender. She’s an accomplished musician who made a commercial breakthrough with “Paper Planes,” one of the year’s biggest sleeper hits. Now, MTV has the exclusive scoop on the soundtrack that will bring M.I.A. and “Slumdog Millionaire” together for your listening enjoyment.

Renowned composer A.R. Rahman will release his critically beloved “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack online next week – and in stores next month – giving moviegoers the chance to take home his unique musical pastiche of what it feels like to grow up on the mean streets of Mumbai, India. In many early reviews of the recently opened Danny Boyle flick, critics (such as our own Kurt Loder) have praised the groundbreaking efforts of the music, which mixes the disparate worlds of Bollywood and hip-hop.

M.I.A.’s love for the Bollywood style had her recording inside A.R. Rahman’s studio in India, and she has referred to him as “the Indian Timbaland.” This new “Slumdog” soundtrack will make their collaboration “O…Saya” available for the first time, as well as a remix of her worldwide hit “Paper Planes.”

Other songs on the soundtrack include “Gangsta Blues” featuring hip-hop artist BlaaZe and “Jai Ho,” which closes out the film with a rousing sing-a-long that has reportedly caused some audiences to burst into applause. “The energy of the film takes you through a roller coaster,” Rahman, one of the world’s top 25 all-time selling recording artists, recently told Variety. “And that’s one of the main inspirations for the whole music.”

The “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack will be available online everywhere November 25th, and at finer record stores on December 23rd. here is the complete listing:

1. “O… Saya” Performed by A R Rahman & M.I.A.

Slumdog Millionaire

You tell us: Is “Slumdog Millionaire” the best soundtrack of the year? If not, what is?

“Twilight” has consumed both your lives and ours, and now the day we’ve all been waiting for is nearly here. In just a number of hours, screaming Twilighters around the country will be getting their first of probably many viewings of the movie on the big-screen.

So we want to remind you…get those webcams ready! As soon as you get back home from watching the movie, head on over to YouRHere.MTV.com and upload your webcam reaction to seeing “Twilight”! How many times did you shriek when RPattz walked into the room? Did you faint during the spider-monkey scene? We want to know, and we’ll be running some of the best (make sure to tag your video as “Twilight” so we can find it).

Until then, join us as we look back at an entire year of “Twilight” mania here at MTV.

By Dave Harrison

Has the “Twilight” backlash already begun mere hours away from the film’s release? For those of you who missed it, the notoriously animated Twilighter community have an entirely new reason to get, well, animated. “South Park” (which airs on our sister network Comedy Central), like it or not, has become a leader in the realm of social commentary, and last night the show took aim at the vampire phenomenon in an episode titled “The Ungroundable.”

Of course, in true “South Park” style, the writers showed no mercy on “those vampire kids,” who they depict as wannabe Goths that have transitioned from Abercrombie to Hot Topic in an attempt to follow the latest trend.

And our favorite human Bella Swan even gets an open — although inaccurate — shout out by name from one of the vampire kids, as they frantically search for the best place to eat lunch away from direct sunlight…even though vampires don’t eat.

So of course, as with every cultural phenomenon, there are bound to be haters. For those of you who saw “The Ungroundable,” was “South Park”’s interpretation funny or unfair?

Or, keep in mind that just two weeks ago, “South Park” lampooned President-elect Barack Obama and his opponent, John McCain. Do you Twilighters take some pride in knowing that everybody’s favorite vampire family has been viewed on the same level as the future leader of the free world?

Is parody the sincerest form of flattery? Or did last night’s episode just cater to the haters?

For those of you with an internet connection while camping outside your local movie theater tonight, you can see the full episode of “The Ungroundable” at southparkstudios.com.

Bryan Singer Talks Valkyrie

Posted by Mr. Shrek on November 20th, 2008

Director Bryan Singer is excited about Valkyrie... which is more than can be said for others around Hollywood.

The controversial movie stars Tom Cruise and is based around a plot to assassinate Hitler. No wonder it's been the subject of controversy.

Scene from Valkyrie

MTV recently caught up with Singer and asked him about the film:

MTV: Did all the negative hype get to you?
Singer: I'm used to speculation because of "X-Men" and "Superman Returns," so it's not something that was a surprise to me, but it does weigh on you. It's an extra stress and an extra burden, because in the end, all the Germans really want from this story is it to be told well. When I would read speculation while I was making "X-Men," I would remind myself that the best I can do for these people is make a great movie. I can't do anything about their speculation. I'm not Hitler.

I can't blot it out. I want people to see the film. It's a film that people need to see before they judge. It opens with a bit of a bang, and then, about a third of the way in, a little ticking clock starts, and it moves faster and faster right up until the last frame. And you get to see Tom Cruise come face to face with Adolf Hitler!

Night at the Museum 2 Photos, Discussion

Director Shawn Levy has high hopes for Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.

"There are rumblings of another installment," he told USA Today, without committing to a follow-up to this one, which opens on May 22. "We would love to take this premise (further). But even to say there's a likely third film is premature.

Here are a couple images from Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, meanwhile. Each features a new face to the franchise; Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader in the role of General Custer and Jonah Hill as a security guard...

Josh BrolinFROM SPLASH PAGE: Sure, the years worth of behind-the-scenes drama surrounding “Watchmen” is an epic story in itself, but lately it seems as though an adaptation of DC Comics’ “Jonah Hex” is starting to give it a run for its money.

This morning, <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117996197.html?categoryid=13&cs=1
" target="_blank">Variety broke the news that due to “creative differences,” Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have officially dropped out as directors for the in-early-development, big screen adaptation of “Jonah Hex” — DC’s resident post-apocalyptic, anti-hero cowboy. And while we could speculate all day as to what those “differences” were, the writing was on the wall when we spoke to Josh Brolin a few days ago, the actor who’s had an on-again, off-again attachment to the lead role of Hex.

“When I first read it I thought, oh my God it’s awful!” Brolin exclaimed to MTV News. “And then I had a moment a week later and I thought why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.”

50 Cent Jumps Loan Shark Role For ‘Dead Man Running’

Posted by Elisabeth Rappe on November 20th, 2008

50 Cent50 Cent’s film career is on fire this year! Weeks ago, he became one of “13” badasses, now he’s jumped into a film that began shooting on Wednesday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he has signed onto Alex de Rakoff’s London gangster movie “Dead Man Running,” an indie thriller financed by two English soccer players. 50 Cent joins cast members Tamer Hassan (”Layer Cake”), Danny Dyer (”The Business”), Brenda Blethyn (”Secrets and Lies”) and Monet Mazur (”Stoned”).

The film centers around an ex-con who’s trying to become a law abiding citizen again, when he’s given 24 hours to come up with $150,000 to pay off a ruthless loan shark, or become a dead man running. He races from the dog tracks of East London to the drug scene of Manchester in order to raise the money, playing as fast and dirty as he has to in order to get the money before the deadline. 50 Cent won’t be playing the lead of the ex-con, but the part of Thigo, the merciless loan shark.

While this sounds like your standard gangster movie, this one actually borrows from the headlines, as it portrays a criminal world that has been hit just as hard by current economic woes as Wall Street and Main Street. After all, if everyone’s getting laid off, who is going to spend the money on drugs, gambling, and other illegal activities? It’s trickle down economics at work — and it’s no laughing matter if even loan sharks are hurting.

At least we know one guy who isn’t going to be affected by economic woes — 50 Cent. As of right now, he has three films coming out in 2009. Since he clearly doesn’t sleep between them, he may rack up three more roles by December.

Will you be checking out 50’s performance? Do you see him as a Hollywood leading man? Chime in below.

Chris Pine Promises Star Trek Sex, Nudity

Posted by Mr. Shrek on November 20th, 2008

As if movie goers needed another reason to line up for next year's Star Trek reboot.

Chris Pine, who plays Captain James T. Kirk in the film, is on record as saying the new version of the franchise will feature adventure, intrigue... and nudity!

Pine Time

One such scene can be found in the recently-released Star Trek trailer, where you can spot an underwear-clad Pine climbing on top of a mystery woman in bed.

But the major scene Pine says will be talked about involves Zoe Saldana taking her top off.

"It'll become famous," the actor said, adding that the movie is "trying to be sexed up for a new generation that really isn't used to seeing Star Trek."

Aaron Eckhart Backs Angelina Jolie as Catwoman

Posted by Mr. Shrek on November 20th, 2008

Angelina Jolie is yet to acknowledge any interesting in portraying Catwoman in the follow-up to The Dark Knight. Still, rumors abound that the actress is being considered for the role.

In response, Aaron Eckhart - who has a pretty good idea of how to create a successful movie in this franchise - has chimed in on the possibility of Jolie donning the famous leather, black suit. He's all for it.

"I thought that was a fantastic idea," Eckhart said. "When I read that, I felt like all of our records that we made [would] be broken if she did Catwoman."

Eckhart, Jolie

We don't know about that, but the casting of Jolie would certainly create buzz. As for his return to the franchise, Eckhart makes a good point:

"I think I died in the movie."

You did.
